Record rapid price growth in Ukrainian fresh produce market
Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index has grown by record 23.3% in the week from October 10th to 16th, after a jump of 22.4% a week before. As a result, the price index has gone up by more than 45% over the past two weeks and by 57.2% over the past three ones.
«As a week before, thanks to an increase of 62.8% in prices, greenhouse vegetables made the largest contribution to growth in the price index», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «The price rise in the segment of traditional vegetables was also significant: up by 42.2% week-on-week».
It should be noted that the demand for some traditional vegetables was extremely high, as wholesale companies were sure of shortage of high-quality produce in farms and were ready to purchase all available volumes at almost any price. As a result, growers with no storage facilities had to seek for them in the hope of a further increase in prices in winter-spring.
Trends in the fruit segment were quite the opposite: the start of the season of imported fruits was traditionally characterized by lower prices. Lemon prices fell most significantly: down by more than a third. Oranges also became slightly less expensive. In general, the fresh fruit price index went down by 6.3% week-on-week.
