Ukrainian supermarkets' sales of potatoes and vegetables fall 30-50% week-on-week

A sharp rise in prices of potatoes and vegetables in Ukraine has negatively affected their sales through supermarket chains, according to Fruit-Inform. Purchasing managers of leading Ukrainian retail chains have recently reported of a significant fall in trade in those produce categories. According to them, the most considerable decrease is now registered in the segments of carrots and onions: consumers' demand for them has fallen by 30-50% week-on-week. Compared with the previous year, Ukrainian supermarkets' sales of potatoes and vegetables have gone down by about 70%.

Now supermarket chains fix their onion purchase prices at UAH 9.00-9.50/kg (EUR 0.36-0.38/kg), white cabbage ones at UAH 7.50-8.50/kg (EUR 0.30-0.34/kg), table beet ones at UAH 5-6/kg (EUR 0.20-0.24/kg), and potato ones vary between UAH 3.50-4.00/kg (EUR 0.14-0.16/kg).

Moreover, supermarkets' buyers say that Ukrainian farmers are uninterested in selling even at those high prices.

«Farms have serious plans to continue raising prices. Many growers count on selling their onion and carrot stocks at no lower than UAH 20-25/kg (EUR 0.80-0.99/kg). However, we hope that importers will start purchasing produce from Poland making Ukrainian growers think about their counterproductive sales policy», a Head of a Fruit & Vegetable Purchasing Department at one of the leading Ukrainian retail chains comments.

Fruit-Inform analysts estimate up to 30% of all potato and vegetable volumes to be sold through retail chains in Ukraine. Moreover, it is supermarkets that, in the majority of cases, are the first to raise purchase prices during serious shortage of supply of those products in Ukraine, as they try to guarantee regular supplies in that way.

How will such a sales policy affect prices of vegetables and potatoes in Ukraine? This and many other questions will be answered at the 12th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2015. Reload» (December 1-3, Kiev, Ukraine).

The conference will also host the 5th International Trade Forum which involves more than 20 Ukrainian supermarket chains and leading importers ready to negotiate with fruit and vegetable suppliers.
