Kazakhstan unable to cover internal market demand for apples by domestic production
Kazakhstan is currently unable to cover its internal market demand for apples by domestic production even theoretically. Such a conclusion was drawn by Fruit-Inform analysts when conducting the study «Apple Business in Ukraine, Russia & Kazakhstan — 2015: Present Situation and Prospects in Growing, Storage, Handling, Processing and Marketing».
According to the study's results, more than 70% of all apples currently sold in Kazakhstan are represented by imported produce. Kazakhstan's apples imports are rather high even during active harvesting of domestic apples, and annual import volumes are almost similar to domestic production. Poland is a traditional leader in apple exports to Kazakhstan with the share of more than a half in Kazakhstan's total imports.
At the same time, Kazakhstan has been rapidly developing its domestic apple production, and those development rates are higher than import growth ones. In fact, an increase in apple supply in Kazakhstan is registered thanks to a rise in internal production, which has grown by almost 50% over the past 5 years, while imports have changed slightly over the same period.
