Ukrainian fresh produce price index up by almost 50% over past two weeks!
Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index has grown by 12.9% in the week from December 19th to 25th, after a sharp jump of 34% in the previous week. As a result, the fresh produce price index has grown by 47% over the past two weeks due to a seasonal factor before the New Year holidays.
«Greenhouse vegetables have made the largest contribution to the price growth thanks to an increase of a third in their prices week-on-week and more than 100% over the past two weeks», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «As a result, greenhouse vegetables' share in the fruit and vegetable basket cost has for the first time over long period exceeded 50% despite a decrease in consumers' purchase volumes of greenhouse cucumbers and tomatoes».
Sellers of imported greenhouse produce already complain about low sales rates and lack of a pre-holiday jump in demand, which may result in necessity to sell at prices below cost. At the same time, domestic producers of greenhouse vegetables have almost finished their season, and year-round growers have faced almost no problems with sales despite their prices being significantly higher than those fixed for imported produce.
It should also be noted that prices of traditional vegetables have for the first time over the past two months not gone down. As regards the fruit segment, an increase in prices of apples and lemons was fully compensated by lower prices of mandarins, which were the leader in sales last week.
