Prices of Chinese cabbage double since beginning of 2016 in Crimea
Prices of Chinese cabbage have doubled at Crimean wholesale markets since the beginning of this year, according to Fruit-Inform.
Now prices vary between RUB 50-70/kg (USD 0.58-0.82/kg), depending on quality, at Krymskiy Privoz Wholesale Market, Simferopol, Crimea. For comparison, prices did not exceed RUB 35/kg (USD 0.41/kg) before the New Year holidays.
Such a rapid growth in prices of Chinese cabbage is registered due to rather limited supply of produce in the peninsula against a background of high demand. According to Crimean growers, production of Chinese cabbage has significantly decreased due to unfavorable weather conditions in the current season. Moreover, some growers have faced problems with spread of diseases; therefore, shelf life of those cabbages was rather short.
At the same time, Crimean companies are unable to compensate shortage of supply with produce from Russia, as the Russian market is currently characterized by the same trends. It should be noted that prices of Chinese cabbage have already grown by 40% year-on-year in Crimea, and the majority of the market participants expect a further increase in them due to decreasing stocks in farms.
