Russia: despite ongoing growth, vegetable prices still less expensive year-on-year

Despite growth in prices of traditional vegetables registered in the Russian market, they are still significantly less expensive year-on-year, according to Fruit-Inform daily price monitoring.

Carrots are now shipped at RUB 12-15/kg (USD 01.3-016/kg), depending on quality, a decrease of 17-20% compared with a year before.

Red beets and onions became averagely a third less expensive year-on-year. For the present, Russian farms ship their red beets at RUB 9-15/kg (USD 0.10-0.16/kg) against no lower than RUB 15/kg (USD 0.23/kg) in the mid-January 2015. Onion prices now vary between RUB 12-16/kg (USD 0.13-0.17/kg) against reaching RUB 22/kg (USD 0.34/kg) a year before.

At the same time, white cabbage growers now sell their produce at RUB 12-18/kg (USD 0.13-0.19/kg), a decrease of about 40% year-on-year.

The sharpest decrease in prices is now registered in the potato segment. Now farmers from main producing regions are ready to ship their produce at RUB 6-9/kg (USD 0.06-0.10/kg), a decrease of 60% year-on-year. Moreover, it should be noted that potatoes are now in the lowest demand among traditional vegetables in Russia.
