No cardinal changes in Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index in March 2016

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index grew by 0.3% in the week from March 26th to April 1st and was almost stable in March 2016 thanks to mixed price trends in the fruit and vegetable market, which had compensated each other.

«March 2016 was not an exception, as it still was the month, when farmers had intensified their sales of traditional vegetables and potatoes from storage. This trend often results in a decrease in prices in the segment», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «In addition, Ukrainians' consumption structure usually starts changing in March, as the market is supplied with first quantities of domestic greenhouse vegetables, while the supply of exotic fruits goes down, and their prices grow».

Greenhouse vegetables became averagely 8% less expensive in Ukraine in March. However, prices of cucumbers went down, while tomato ones grew. Traditional vegetables and potatoes became 8.7% more expensive mainly thanks to a rise in prices in table beets and carrots. Table beets became 42.9% more expensive, while carrot prices went up by 14.3%. At the same time, onion prices fell by 8.3%, and ones of white cabbage and potatoes were stable.

The fresh fruit price index went up by 6.9% despite a decrease of 6.7% in prices of domestic and imported apples. However, a decrease in apple prices was more than compensated by more expensive mandarins, bananas, oranges and lemons.
