Polish apple stocks still record high
Polish apple stocks still were record high in the beginning of March 2016, according to WAPA. Current apple stocks as of the beginning of March were 11% higher than registered in the same period of the previous season, when they totaled 724,000 tons.
It should be noted that Idared apples accounted for the share of about 25% in total stocks in the beginning of this March. Golden Delicious and Champion apples also accounted for large shares: 15% and 14%, respectively.
Such large stocks are connected with a sharp fall in exports to Russia in this season. We would remind you that the Russian Federation has previously purchased the largest part of Polish total apple exports: 200,000-700,000 tons annually. Even in the previous season, despite active ban on imports of fruits and vegetables from the EU, Russia still purchased relatively large volumes of Polish apples thanks to re-exports through third countries.
It this season Russia has seriously toughened its control over shipments of banned products, and Polish exports significantly went down.
Under those conditions Polish growers active seek for alternative target markets; however, it is very difficult for them to find new markets for such volumes.
