Price collapse in Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market in early May

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index has fallen by 20.6% in the week from April 30 to May 6. Moreover, fruit and vegetable prices have become averagely 43.5% lower over the past three weeks.

«Prices of three fresh produce categories have more than halved: early white cabbage, greenhouse cucumbers and strawberries», says. Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «It should be noted that a decrease in prices could have been even more significant if it were not for rises of 10% and 7.7% in prices of onions and table beets, respectively».

Prices of early white cabbage have for the first time in this season fallen below those fixed for last year's produce. As a result, the demand for early produce sharply grew. Meanwhile, prices of last year's white cabbage also went down due to a decrease in the demand for this fresh produce category in the Ukrainian market.

As regards fruit prices, they were stable last week except for strawberry ones.
