Fruit and vegetable prices more almost halve in Ukraine since the mid-April
Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index has decreased by another 5.2% in the week from May 7th to 13th, after a fall of 20.6% a week before. As a result, the price index has fallen by 48.7% over the past four weeks. However, the market situation was mixed last week.
«Despite a cumulative decrease in the price index, carrots, red beets, onions and potatoes became more expensive last week. However, a cumulative rise in prices of traditional vegetables amounted to 3.1% due to a fall of almost 40% in prices of early white cabbage», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «An unexpected increase in strawberry prices should also be mentioned, as rainy weather has resulted in lower supply of strawberries in the Ukrainian market».
As a result, a further fall in greenhouse vegetables made the largest contribution to a cumulative decrease in the Ukrainian fresh produce price index. Cucumbers became 28.6% less expensive, and tomato prices went down by 17.9%.
Fruit prices were stable for the second week in a row. In particular, apple growers' hopes for a rise in prices in May have not come true yet, as apple supply is still rather considerable in the country.
