Cucumber prices down by a trird in Crimea over weekend
Prices of greenhouse cucumbers have been rapidly going down in Crimea and fell by a third over the past weekend, according to Fruit-Inform daily price monitoring.
Now prices of long smooth cucumbers vary between RUB 20-30/kg (USD 0.29-0.44/kg) at Krymskiy Privoz Wholesale Market, Simferopol, a decrease of 71% week-on-week. «Bumpy» cucumbers (gherkins) are offered at RUB 40-45/kg (USD 0.59-0.66/kg), 50-57% lower compared with the beginning of last week.
Sellers connect such a sharp fall in prices with the fact that the majority of greenhouse growers have already started their harvesting campaign; therefore, the supply has sharply grown. Meanwhile, sales rates are not high, as growers have to sell all their volumes in the local market, while Russian companies' demand for Crimean produce is rather weak.
It should be noted that current prices of Crimean cucumbers are significantly lower year-on-year. Prices of gherkins were 22-25% higher in the same period of the previous season, while long smooth cucumbers were twice as high.
