Ukraine to face shortage of watermelon supply in 2016
Ukraine may face shortage of supply of watermelons in 2016, according to the results of the fundamental study «Fruit & Vegetable Market of Ukraine-2016: Results and Forecasts for the Next Season» recently conducted by Fruit-Inform analysts.
Many farms have significantly reduced their areas under watermelons in 2016, as the previous year’s financial results were negative for them. In addition, watermelon plantations have significantly suffered from rainfall and hail in the southern regions of Ukraine in June. Growers were forced to fully or partially resow suffered areas, and many of them were unable to do it due to financial problems. As a result, some farms expect their watermelon production to go down by 20-30% this year.
As a result, Fruit-Inform analysts believe that the Ukrainian watermelon market will most likely be characterized by shortage of supply. However, everything will depend on weather conditions during ripening period and exporters’ demand.
