Ukrainian onion production significantly up in 2016 - Ukrstat
Ukrainian onion production has significantly grown in 2016, according to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, despite a decrease in areas.
Production volumes totaled 1.014 mln tons in 2016, a rise of 6% compared with 2015, when Ukrainian growers had harvested just 956,000 tons of onions.
Growth in production is connected with higher yields of onions in Ukraine, as areas under them went down by 2% year-on-year and totaled just 54,800 tons.
Meanwhile, Fruit-Inform analysts do not agree with such estimations. The results of the study “Fruit & Vegetable Market of Ukraine-2016: Results and Forecasts for the Next Season” showed that it was an increase in areas to have backed a rise in onion production. It should also be noted that the supply of high-quality produce in the current season is lower compared with a season before due to unfavorable weather conditions.
As a result, a rise in production and worse quality of produce have already affected onion prices in Ukraine. In the meantime, Ukrainian farms are ready to ship their onions at UAH 1.50-2.50/kg (EUR 0.05-0.09/kg) and make no attempts to revise those levels despite a serious decrease in stocks. For comparison, prices in the beginning of spring 2016 were averagely three times as high as present levels.
