Ukrainian growers start their tomato season
Ukrainian growers started offering their first volumes of tomatoes last week, according to Fruit-Inform.
It should be noted that just a few greenhouse farms have started their season, and their outputs are still low. As a result, tomatoes are now sold in small quantities with retail chains as the main buyers. Prices vary between UAH 40-45/kg (EUR 1.38-1.55/kg), and tomatoes on the vine are offered at UAH 50/kg (EUR 1.73/kg).
It should also be noted that the Ukrainian tomato season started with no delay compared with 2016, and prices are similar year-on-year despite rather abundant supply of less expensive produce of Turkish origin.
The supply will grow only in the beginning of April, and domestic farms do not expect prices to significantly go down until that moment.
