Russia: livestock industry performances in June and the first half year of 2004
As of July 1, 2004 the number of cattle, kept by all categories of Russia's animal breeders, according to estimates was 26.1 million heads (6 percent less than as of the same date of last year), of which there were 11.0 million cows (5.7 percent less than year ago). The number of hogs was 16.3 million heads (11.1 percent less), of sheep and goats - 19.9 million heads (4.6 percent more). Private peasant households were keeping 45.3 percent of cattle as of the date, 50.3 percent of hogs and 56.9 percent of sheep and goats (in early July of 2003 - 43.8, 48.4 and 58.9 percent correspondingly).
In June this year all categories of Russian livestock breeders produced 500,000 tonnes of animals and poultry for slaughter (live weight), which is at the level of previous month. Production of milk increased by 300,000 tonnes from May - to 3.7 million tonnes, production of eggs increased by 200 million - to 3.5 billion.
In the first half year of 2004 the animal breeders, according to estimates, produced 3.1 million tonnes of animals and poultry for slaughter in live weight, 16.2 million tonnes of milk and 18 billion eggs.
