Watermelon prices down in Ukraine year-on-year
Watermelon prices have been actively going down at Ukrainian wholesale markets, and watermelons are already significantly less expensive compared with a year before, according to Fruit-Inform.
Prices have decreased by about 10% at Shuvar Wholesale Market, Lviv, and Stolychny Wholesale Market, Kiev, over the past weekend. Now, sellers from Shuvar offer their watermelons at UAH 2.40-2.70/kg (EUR 0.08-0.09/kg), depending on quality, a decrease of 29-31% year-on-year. Meanwhile, prices in Kiev vary between UAH 1.80-2.50/kg (EUR 0.06-0.08/kg), a fall of 44-49% compared with the end of July 2016.
As regards Dubovo Wholesale Market, Khelnytsky, watermelon prices have gone down by 15-20% there over a week and now stand at UAH 2-3/kg (EUR 0.07-0.10/kg), depending on quality. It should be noted that a year before prices were about 60% higher there.
Meanwhile, sellers from Kopani Wholesale Market, Kherson Oblast, offer their watermelons at UAH 1.20-1.50/kg (EUR 0.04-0.05/kg), a fall of 40% week-on-week and 20-25% year-on-year.
Sellers connected negative trend in watermelon prices with several factors. In the first instance, they are now under the influence of a seasonal rise in the supply. Meanwhile, the demand for watermelons is not high now, as buyers often are unsatisfied with the quality of offered watermelons.
