Ukraine: cucumber prices fall below last year’s levels
Ukrainian farms are forced to reduce their cucumber prices, which have already fallen below last year’s levels, according to Fruit-Inform.
Now growers from the southern regions offer their cucumbers at UAH 15-20/kg (EUR 0.48-0.64/kg), a decrease of 12-20% week-on-week. A fall in prices in other regions was less significant: UAH 20-24/kg (EUR 0.64-0.77/kg), a decrease of 20-26% week-on-week.
The market participants connect the pressure on prices with an increase in the supply of cucumbers grown in summer greenhouses thanks to better weather conditions in the beginning of this week. Meanwhile, the demand for cucumbers fell considerably; therefore, companies reported of rather large stocks of unsold produce.
It should also be noted that current prices of Ukrainian cucumbers are already 15% lower than registered a year before, and the market participants see still no potential in their growth, taking into account abundant supply. Moreover, they expect Turkish cucumbers to arrive in the Ukrainian market soon, and this fact will most likely exert additional pressure on prices.
