Price on cabbage in Odesa oblast jumped up in result of the weather conditions deterioration

As it was reported by the players of fruit and vegetable market in Odesa oblast, the price growth on white headed cabbage continued this week. There are some unconfirmed messages about the sale of the wholesale parties of cabbage on prices up to USD $ 0.38/kg; the maximum prices of the past week did not exceed USD $ 0.3/kg. The retail price stopped on the level of USD $ 0.47/kg, according to the information provided by Dmitriy Chernyak, the Market Information Specialist, Odesa office of Agricultural Marketing Project (AMP).

The producers mention the good demand on cabbage in spite of the price growth. One of the possible reasons of price increase may be the huge percent of spoiled cabbage in the reserves. The other, more important reason was the bad weather conditions which prevented the supply of the cheaper cabbage to Odessa oblast from the other regions of Ukraine.

According to the prognoses of AMP specialists, despite of the production decrease observed for white headed cabbage in 2004, the produced quantity exceeds the estimated consumption volume; though the significant losses during the storing period may correct this assessment. Odesa oblast traditionally overproduces early cabbage, but is forced to purchase late cabbage in the other oblasts where the production of this commodity is cheaper.
