Zakarpattya is preparing for the season of early vegetables and potato
Thanks to the unique climate Zakarpattya traditionally specializes on early commodity production. The major early crops produced here are cabbage, potato, radish; the producers actively take this advantage to gain the additional profit. The significant demand on the early commodities produced in Zakarpattya oblast is observed from the side of the neighboring oblasts and central Ukraine, part of early potato and cabbage is also supplied to the eastern region.
According to the evaluations carried out by Agricultural Marketing Project (AMP), this year the producers extended much the acreage of the early vegetable production lands. Even the relatively low price on the early cabbage which formed past year (sometimes the early cabbage price dropped down to USD $ 0.09-0.1/kg) has not scared the producers.
As the farmers report, this year the planting of early vegetables is delayed because of the cold weather. In the previous year potato was planted out on the 15th-25th of March; this year the planting will be done minimum a week later, as for this process a dry warm weather is needed.
The producers will harvest first radish in the middle of April, cabbage - by the end of April, potato - in the second half of May.
We should mention that the past year price growth on fuel influenced much the price variations on the early commodities. This price difference amounted up to 200-300% for the regions where the production is concentrated and the regions - main sales markets.
