The price on red beets decreased 30% this week
A significant decrease of the wholesale prices on red beets is proved by the results of the wholesale price monitoring conducted by the Agricultural Marketing Project. In the beginning of the previous week red beets cost USD 0.26-0.3/kg on the main wholesale produce markets of the country, and up to USD 0.4/kg in Kyiv; today the price on this commodity does not exceed USD 0.22-0.24/kg, and the average price on red beets is on the level of USD 0.19-0.2/kg. The price decrease is no doubt connected with the bulk supply of the newly harvested produce on the country markets.
According to the calculations done by the farm business model, past year the production cost for red beets in Ukraine was USD 0.02-0.03/kg depending from the region and the applied technologies. At the same time, in 2004 the wholesale price on red beets did not go lower than USD 0.07/kg, and the average price was 0.12/kg. As we see, this crop production is feasible enough.
