It is harder to purchase tomatoes in Kherson oblast now

Some days ago you can come to Kopany market in Kherson oblast and easily buy there 5-7 tons of tomatoes; it is hardly be possible today. The tomato supply decreased much comparing to the previous year, according to the information provided by Roman Rybalko, the Wholesale Price Monitoring Specialist of Agricultural Marketing Project (AMP). Many wholesalers are willing to purchase a large set of tomatoes on the market, but in vain. They have to search for tomatoes in the neighboring villages and purchase the commodities directly from the producers. The decreased tomato supply is caused first of all by the end of mass harvesting of the product.

Tomato deficit has already led to the price growth - on 60-80% during the recent days. Today the average price on tomato on Kopani market is USD 0.16/kg that is 0.06/kg more than a week ago. We'll remind that the results of the daily wholesale price monitoring are placed in the sector "Daily prices", AMP web-site.

According to the prognoses of the Agricultural Marketing Project, tomato production in 2005 grew 16% comparing to 2004, it reached 1.28 mln. tons. Kherson oblast remains the largest tomato producer in Ukraine; a quarter of gross production in Ukraine is harvested here.
