Are There Polish and Russian Vegetables in the Ukrainian Market?

The produce market players of Eastern Ukraine say that high prices have caused supplies of cheaper onions and cabbage from Russia to enter into our country. In addition, some expect supplies of Polish vegetables to also start entering Ukraine. It is not easy to confirm or deny this information. With regards to Russia however, they recently banned fruit and vegetable imports from Poland, so it is doubtful that we will see large volumes coming out of there.

When talking about the possibility of Polish produce imports, legal import to Ukraine seems to be almost impossible for a majority of vegetables presently. Even potato prices are double the prices observed in Poland. Still, from January 1, we can expect import growth for some cabbage varieties (cauliflower, kohlrabi, broccoli), as the seasonal import tax will be in place. The most rapid import growth may be observed for apples, as 5% seasonal tax will be applied starting from December the 1st, 2005.

You will be able to obtain a great deal of information regarding price perspectives in the Ukrainian produce market, as well as the opportunities for export, import and inner vegetable trade during the second international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2005" to be held on the 5th-7th of December 2005 in Kyiv, at the National Complex "Expocenter of Ukraine". More than 300 persons from 16 countries have already registered for participation in the event, including several large Polish and Dutch traders. A full list of participants as of yesterday is available on site.
