Apple and Pear Prices Slumped in Poland Today
The first of December is traditionally considered the beginning of apple and pear sales season for a majority of the farmers and wholesale companies, as the decreased seasonal import taxes on these products usually start on the Russian market on this day. Russia is a key sales market for Polish orchardists. However, Russia has not raised the ban on Polish produce supplies so its no surprise that as a result, apple and pear prices slumped in Poland.
In only one-day apple and pear prices have decreased 10-30% at the Bronishe market, the largest wholesale market in Poland. Prices on apple and pear varieties, which are the most popular in Ukraine and Russia, decreased most rapidly. Average prices on Golden Delicious varieties have decreased today on USD 0.12/kg.
Its easy to see why Polish trade firms have been recently showing a keen interest in other markets, Ukraine in particular. This has been indirectly confirmed by the scheduled participation of nine Polish firms, as well as several Ukrainian representatives of Polish produce wholesalers, in the second international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2005". In the opinion of analysts from the Agricultural Marketing Project, the situation with the Polish apple and pear market may lead to considerable growth in supplies to the Ukrainian market as soon as December. Decreased apple import taxes are also effective as if today in Ukraine as well. It is expected that prices on top quality apples and pears are likely to decrease soon.
