Ukrainian vets protesting; demanding dismissal of AP minister

Ukraine's association of veterinary medicine professionals has urged the government "to stop interference of incompetent Agrarian Policy Ministry's officials into the work of veterinary specialists", the organisation stated in a release, signed by its chairwoman Oksana Rud.

The document has also contained a demand to dismiss from his position Agrarian Policy Minister of Ukraine Olexandr Baranivsky due to his abusive incompetence.

Veterinaries are also infuriated by Agrarian Policy Ministry's releasing information, intended for publication in media, which is discrediting the State Veterinary Service of Ukraine.

In support of its claims, the organisation held a four-hour action of protest outside of Ukraine's Agrarian Policy Ministry on Monday, the body of protesters being comprised of veterinary specialists from all regions of Ukraine.

"We had not set a goal to organise mass protest action. There were about 200 people who came, all qualified veterinary professionals", Oksana Rud said to APK-Inform in a telephone interview. She said that some people had not come, because they had got threatening calls from Kiev: "you participate in the action - you'll be sacked".

Earlier the veterinaries applied to the President of Ukraine with a request to interfere into the conflict between Agrarian Policy Ministry Olexandr Baranivsky and State Department of Veterinary Medicine. The vets were strongly opposing dismissal of Petro Verbytsky fro the post of Chief Veterinary Inspector.

On Monday December 5 President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko stated that the chief veterinary would be dismissed because of the professional errors concerned with bird flu outburst in the Crimea.

Agrarian Policy Minister was also accusing Mr. Verbytsky of "tricking out funds" from government on the bird flu pretext, for a hardly practicable idea of developing bird flu vaccine.

On Friday December 9 Prime Minster Yuri Yekhanurov signed a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers about resignation of Petro Verbytsky from the position of Chief Veterinary Inspector.
