Investments to fruit and berry production in Ukraine are very attractive - IFC
According to information provided by "Agrooglyad: Fruits and Vegetables" weekly, investments in intensive fruit and berry production are presently one of the most attractive niches in Ukrainian agriculture. Experts from the International Finance Corporation agree and it was reiterated when an IFC representative made a presentation on investments in the produce sector of Ukraine at the second international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2005".
In experts' opinions, investments into apple and pear production are the most attractive in almost all regions of Ukraine. Establishing new orchards and applying the most advanced technologies are the keys to success along with using the most popular and successful varieties. Berry production also looks very promising. This takes into consideration fast return on costs, excellent weather conditions in Ukraine, cheap and qualified workers and dynamically developing domestic and export markets. Production of blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, as well as table grapes, sour and sweet cherries are considered to be the most profitable, if post harvest handling practices and the most advanced technologies are applied.
Southern regions of Ukraine, Zakarpattya, Chernivtsi and Vinnitsa oblasts are among the areas identified with the most potential for successful fruit and berry production. Traditionally, fruit and berry production is especially practical near large cities where there are more options for fresh market sales. According to experts from the Agricultural Marketing Project, the produce business in Ukraine should be able to attract up to $ 4 billion in investments in the next five years.
