Polish Onions Get Ready to be Imported to Ukraine
Polish importers will start supplying onions to Ukraine as soon as in January 2006, according to information provided by several Polish companies to the Agricultural Marketing Project. Onion prices are now favorable for export. Today onions cost $ 0.12-0.19/kg at the Bronishe market in Poland. The average wholesale onion price is $ 0.33-0.37/kg in Ukraine. Importers indicate they will sell Polish onions at prices cheaper than are currently available in Ukraine. In addition, it is thought that Polish onions are of a better quality.
According to estimations of the Agricultural Marketing Project Ukrainian producers were able to gather a relatively high onion harvest of sufficient quality. However, demand grew and many unprofessional producers gave up onion production and these factors lead to the onion price being several times higher than it was a year ago.
Import tax for onions is EUR 0.2/kg, so the margin seems insufficient for effective export. But, the optimistic mood of Polish companies and Ukrainian importers shows they have a solution in mind for this problem.
