The Price of Imported Tomatoes in Odesa Continues to Drop
The trend of decreasing prices for greenhouse tomatoes was reported last week and it continues this week. Small wholesale sets are selling for between $0.98-1.37/kg with retail costs being $1.37-1.96/kg. Last week retail prices were between $1.96-2.35/kg. Last year at this same time tomato costs were $1.37-2.75/kg at the central Odesa retail market.
Some in the market believe vendors are decreasing prices on this perishable product trying to sell surplus stock supplied earlier. The demand turned out to be lower than expected, says Dmitrij Chernyak, the Market Information Specialist from the Odesa office of the Agricultural Marketing Project.
When considering the market situation in other oblasts and the significant cold snap, the price on quality tomato will probably drop below $1.37/kg soon. Also specialists speculate the price on lower quality tomatoes may also decrease more but not in the near future.
