Cabbage overproduction is observed in Cherkasy oblast

According to information provided by Sergey Strokan, the Market Information Specialist of Cherkasy oblast, Agricultural Marketing Project to "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal, excessive supply of cabbage is observed in Cherkasy oblast. Wholesale price for cabbage sometimes declines down to $0.06-0.07/kg if the product is sold out of field. The producers experience problems to sell cabbage even for such a low price. Part of harvest can be even lost on field: the sales & storage season is limited for early and medium cabbage varieties.

It is worth mentioning that at the same period of time past year the wholesale price for cabbage fluctuated within $0.27-0.39/kg. During the past year the wholesale prices for cabbage did not actually decline lower $0.19/kg - it made a rather good profit for producers. As a result, high price level of 2005 season stimulated cabbage cultivation areas to extend up to 30% in the present season 2006.

Speaking about further development of price situation, most specialists of produce market are united to think that the price for late cabbage varieties will be significantly lower than in 2005, taking into account a considerable supply growth.
