Russia may stop corn and soybean imports from US due to new GMO regulations
Russia may stop importing corn and soybeans from the USA, said Sergey Danquert, Russian First Deputy Minister of Agriculture on July 3. According to him, this will be dome due to the differences in Russia's and US legislation concerning GMO products.
Danquert pointed out that starting from October 1st, 2002 Russian law on state registration of genetically modified products comes into force, and from that date onwards Russia will import only products officially registered in the country. "If we have registered, say, five varieties of GMO corn and soybeans, we will export only these five.
As for US imports of meat produced from animals that were fed by GMO fodders, Mr. Danquert said that this issue would be discussed in during separate negotiations.
