"Vegetable growers of Polissya are satisfied by weather conditions of 2007"
Monitoring of situations with vegetable yield in different regions of Ukraine, made by specialists of the project "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits"
Shows that this season differed from the previous ones by more expressed inequality in distribution of sediments and warmness among regions.
In particular, gardeners of southern and central regions of Ukraine suffered considerable losses as a result of hot and dry weather, which affected negatively yields of most vegetable cultures. As a result, now prices for most vegetable and melon cultures in the South of Ukraine are essentially higher than those last year.
At the same time, vegetable producers in woodlands that traditionally grow mostly late varieties of root vegetables, potatoes and cabbage, are satisfied this year with the weather conditions of 2007, The amount of sediments was sufficient this year, especially in western regions of Ukraine, and there was not excessive hotness. So many professional producers expect the yield of potato, carrot, red beet, and cabbage, onion, and other cultures to go up in comparison with last season. Note that prices for most traditional vegetables cultures in western oblasts of Ukraine were not increasing as essentially as in southern and central oblasts. Thus, wholesale prices for onion and garlic have declined slightly comparing to August 2006.
