Milk prices in Ukraine will rise 40 to 50 percent - Agrarian Ministry

Ministry of Agrarian Policy expects a 40 to 50 percent rise in purchasing prices for milk in Ukraine in autumn-winter period, Deputy State Secretary for the Ministry of Agrarian Policy Yuri Melnyk told journalists September 11.

The most considerable price increase is expected for large shipments of milk, he said. The purchasing prices will tend upwards through the rest of this year and over the first quarter of the next one, he said.

He believes such a trend will result from the decrease in milk production in large-capacity milk-producing farms due to a drop in uterine cattle head (cows), observed in recent time.

According to the Ministry's data as of September 1 purchasing prices for milk in Ukraine were equivalent to US$0.07 to 0.12 per kilogramme, for top standard milk - US$0.09 to 0.14 per kilogramme.

Head of cows in Ukraine as of September 1 was 4.96 million.
