Ukraine: weather concerns in Polissya regions

Ministry of agrarian policy is worried about situation in Polissya regions (north-western steppe-forest zone of Ukraine), taking shape as a result of drought-like weather in this part of the country.

According to Agrarian Ministry Serhiy Ryzhuk, the drought "is burning down" the crop of late-ripening grains. It is also complicating the sowing campaign.

"It's impossible to work in fields: dust, drought, there's been no rain for two months, everything has dried out," the Minister said.

According to him, such weather conditions are seriously endangering future crop, in particular - that of rapeseeds. If there is no rain for two more weeks, the farmers will have to re-plant winter rape in spring, as rape plantings are in an unsatisfactory state already now, he said.

According to the Ministry, Polissya regions embrace some 90 percent of rape plantings in Ukraine.

The Minister has estimated situation with winter crops in other regions of Ukraine as satisfactory.
