Ukraine: Quality onion continues going expensive

According to the data of the monitoring conducted by "Agrooglyad: Fruits and Vegetables" project, the wholesale prices for onion continue increasing in Ukraine. The market players think that this situation is primarily predetermined by the seasonal reduction of free volumes of onion in the farms.

However, to the opinion of wholesale companies, the problems mostly occur not with the quantity but with the quality of the products. We have already observed that the farms were able to harvest a limited volumes of quality onion this year because of doughty summer. Despite of the relatively low activeness of the exporters, the owners of onion are able to increase prices thanks to stable demand for quality products from the side of consumers of the inner market.

According to the data of "Agrooglyad: Fruits and Vegetables", as of today, the prices for quality onion have already exceeded 38% in average the past year level. Less quality products have got only 10% expensive. According to the experts' forecasts, the prices for onion will further increase. The intensity of price growth will mostly depend on the interest from the side of the exporters and the storage conditions. The companies plan to supply the main volumes of onion to Russia and also to the markets of Belarus, Bulgaria and Moldova.

The details of the perspectives of onion market and other types of fruits & vegetables in Ukraine will be presented by Andriy Yarmak, the Head of "Agrooglyad: Fruits and Vegetables" project during the fourth international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2007. Meeting New Leader", to be held on the territory of the National Complex "Expocenter of Ukraine" on the 4th-6th 2007 of December in Kyiv.
