Potato yield declined down to 416 centners/ha in Great Britain in 2007
British Potato Council provided information that potato production declined 1% in Great Britain in 2007 comparing to the harvest 2006 of 5.45 mln. tons. The production decline took place on the background of 3% extended cultivation areas. At the same time, the excessive rainfalls and increased damage of plantations by diseases and pests led to the significant harvest losses and 4% declined average yield comparing to the previous year.
The average potato yield in Great Britain in 2007 reached 416 centners per hectare. The yield has been gradually declining since 2002 when this figure amounted to 482 centners/ha.
At the same time, the source informs, the actual losses may be even higher because potato quality is far from being desired. This potato will quickly lose quality in storages.
CIS produce business weekly "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" informs, potato production has increased 7% this year in Ukraine comparing to 2006. The harvest approximately amounted to 20.8-20.9 mln. tons. And, potato production in Russia declined comparing to 2006, according to the tentative estimations.
