Ukrainian farmers overprice watermelons

According to the Ukrainian wholesale companies, the farmers overprice watermelons. To date, the prices, declared by many producers, keep at the level $0.22-0.32/kg, when production cost of watermelons is several times lower, reported Delovaya stolitsa.

The Ukrainian customers have no choice and they have to buy water melons at such price. At the same time, high prices impede export shipments. According to the market participants, watermelons trade outside the country may be stimulated only after price-cutting or introducing a new product to the market. For example, in Europe small in size watermelons with weight 2-3 kg as well as watermelons without stones are in high demand.

Prospects of foreign trade of melons and other fruits and vegetables in Ukraine and Russia will be discussed during the Third International Conference "Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia - 2008" , taking place in Moscow on November 5-7 and the Fifth International Conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2008", taking place in Kiev on December 2-3. The companies paying a registration fee before beginning of September will have a discount.
