Estonia: in winter the prices for vegetables to rise faster than last year

Due to low harvest the prices for vegetables in Estonia will be higher this winter than last year, considered Pile Lijvaauk, the head of the agricultural sector of the Institute of Conjuncture.

While in case with grain, the price mostly depends on harvest in other countries as it is easy to deliver grain from abroad to the domestic market, the fresh vegetables are such a product that Estonians used to buy from the domestic producers.

Potatoes and other vegetables in many regions of Estonia are currently under water, that does not allow harvesting. And it is impossible to protractedly store the produce with high concentration of moisture. Therefore, the specialists expected for rise in prices for vegetables this winter at higher rates as compared to the last year.

According to P.Lijvaauk, at the moment, potatoes and other vegetables are not more expensive than last year, because the agricultural producers are interested in fast sales of their harvest, but in winter and spring the prices, certainly, will be higher compared to the last year, Postimees reported.
