Use of fertilisers in Ukraine decreased 12 times since 1990
Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for Agriculture Ivan Kyrylenko spoke to a meeting of Ukraine's agricultural and fertiliser industry management, held in Cherkassy.
At the meeting it was stated that use of fertilisers in Ukraine since 1990 had decreased 12 times, which affected adversely the country's farming: degradation and exhaust of soil had embraced all the regions.
The meeting participants have visited Cherkassy JSC Azot - Ukraine's major producer of mineral fertilisers, which plans to boost its output up to 1 billion tonnes a year. It was said, however, that production capacity of this enterprise, as well as other fertiliser producers of Ukraine, had not been used at full value so far. One of the main reason of the sad state of Ukrainian fertiliser industry is domination of cheap import fertilisers on domestic market - primarily, Russian ones. Should output of Ukrainian fertilisers be further decreased, it can cause a rise of their cost-price and ultimate loss of their competitiveness in domestic market, the meeting participants said.
Ivan Kyrylenko said that Russia's intend to introduce export duty for mineral fertilisers was a positive fact. It could strengthen positions of Ukrainian producers.
