Production of strawberries and raspberries increases rapidly near large Ukrainian cities

Fruit-Inform analysts report that production of strawberries and raspberries in 2010 will be expended primarily near large Ukrainian cities. Study shows that production of soft fruits near large cities remains amongst the most profitable areas of agribusiness in Ukraine.

Production of strawberries and raspberries is expending most significantly within 20-70km radius from Kiev, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa and Lviv. Thanks to low transportation costs and possibility to deliver berries to the local wholesale markets quickly, small growers located near large cities usually are able to obtain high price for their produce without major losses and risks. Besides, their berries look better and fresher as do not get damaged during transportation. Larger growers located near large cities usually sell their berries from the field for cash without having to spend money on pre-cooling and transportation. Some of them, however, have been actively investing into pre-cooling facilities recently to obtain better price. According to Fruit-Inform, growers near large cities were able to assure 80-100% margin on sales of strawberries and raspberries.

During the First international conference “Berries of Ukraine – 2010” , which will take place on the largest Ukrainian wholesale market “Shuvar” in the city of Lviv (Lvov) on May 20-21, 2010 participants will be able to learn more about the berry market trends and outlook as well as about new technologies of growing, handling and marketing. Most of the largest berry market participants have already registered to attend the conference.

Conference will be held simultaneously with the exhibition devoted to berries. On the second day of the event, participants of the conference will have an opportunity to visit one of the largest strawberry farms in Ukraine “Agro Fruitika Byshkiv” and a berry processing company “Galfrost”.
