Ukraine's livestock industry in July 2003

According to State Statistics Committee of Ukraine, the head of cattle in Ukraine as of August 1, 2003 constituted 9.213 million, having dropped from July 1 this year by 195,000 heads or 2.1 percent. Of this stock the number of cows, which is 50.3 percent of the total cattle herd, decreased by 28,900 heads - down to 4,637,300 heads. In comparison with August 1, 2002 the drop in the number of cattle in Ukraine made 9.5 percent (by 965,000 heads).

The head of pigs in July decreased on a month by 49,000 heads or 0.5 percent. In comparison with the same period of 2002 the number of pigs decreased by 517,000 heads or 5.4 percent.

The head of poultry in Ukraine with all categories of livestock owners as of August 1 constituted 183.355 million, increasing from July 1 by 2.323 million heads or 1.3 percent, but showing a decrease from August 1, 2002, when the number of poultry had made 187.950 million heads.

In July 2003 the sales of animals and poultry for slaughter by all categories of livestock producers in Ukraine amounted 156,000 tonnes, which is by 19,400 tonnes or 11.1 percent below the amount, sold in the previous month. Production of milk constituted 1,548,600 tonnes against 1,627,500 tonnes in June, production of eggs - 1.026 billion against 1.108 billion in June.

Totally over the seven months of 2003 production of livestock for slaughter in Ukraine constituted 1,367,200 tonnes, which is by 104,200 tonnes or 8.3 percent above the production over the same period of 2002; production of milk made 8,294,700 tonnes (3.9 percent down from 2002), production of eggs - 7.430 billion (2.7 percent up).
