Fruit and veg prices increased by 62% in September comparatively with the same month of the previous year

Fruit and vegetable index of Fruit-Inform calculated on the basis of our own daily monitoring of wholesale prices shows that, in September 2010, the most consumed fruits and vegetables were higher in price by 62% comparatively with the same month in 2009. This means that with the same consumption volumes Ukrainians would spend by 62% more for fruit and vegetable produce in September of the current year. However, according to our estimations, consumption of the most expensive products (primarily, fruits and glass-grown vegetables) decreased by 10-20% in September 2010 due to high prices. The main reason of fruit and vegetable inflation was increase of prices for borsch vegetables (cabbages, beetroots, carrots, and onions) and potato by 92% comparatively with September 2009. Cucumbers and tomatoes grew in price by 76%, main fruits – by 31%. A detailed information about main categories of fruit and vegetable produce price forecasts for the second half of the season and preliminary production and price forecast for the season 2011/2012 will be presented in course of work of the seventh international conference “Vegetables and fruit of Ukraine 2010”.
