Fruit and veg produce sharply increased in price again within the last week

Fruit and vegetable index of Fruit-Inform shows that cost of fruit and vegetable basket of a Ukrainian consumer increased by 6% at once within the last week. In such a way, within 2 last weeks, main categories of fruits and vegetables have already increased in price by 14%.

Within the last week, increase was experienced for prices for all main categories of produce, except glass-grown vegetables. The main event of the week was rather sharp hike of prices for potatoes that were stably decreasing in price since early September till the last week. Specialists explain this with fall of temperature and decrease of supply of produce of quality lower than average with simultaneous growth of demand in anticipation of holidays.

Fruit basket increased in price due to tangerines and lemons as a result of stoppage in supplies of produce from Turkey.

“This year, holiday growth of prices for fruits and vegetables started earlier than usually”, - Andriy Yarmak, Head of Fruit-Inform Project , tells. “This is caused by fears of possible shortage of quality produce on market. Currently, wholesale companies have already begun active contraction and purchase of fruits and vegetables of long-term storage for formation of buffer able to secure uninterrupted sales during the period of holidays”, - Andriy Yarmak thinks.
