Fruit and vegetable inflation reached 5% over month in Ukraine

Fruit and vegetable index of Fruit-Inform shows that the cost of fruit and vegetable basket of Ukrainian consumers increased by 3.7% over the last week. In such a way, in the end of January Ukrainian consumers spent 5% more for fruits and vegetables than in December of the previous year.

Greenhouse vegetables having increased in price by 17% at once were the main reason for growth of prices for fruit and vegetable produce during the last week. Prices for other vegetable categories were relatively stable. Slight increase of prices was also observed in fruit segment due to growth of prices for bananas.

At the same time, two of three main vegetable groups increased in price over the last week. Prices for fruits increased the least – only by 3% over the month; prices for traditional borsch vegetables (cabbages, onions, beets, carrots) – by 16% at once. At the same time, greenhouse vegetables decreased in price by 10% over the month notwithstanding their considerable growth during the last week. As of today, there are almost exclusively imported greenhouse cucumbers and tomatoes in the Ukrainian market, as greenhouse vegetable production is little profitable in Ukraine in such a period of time over the last week .

In such a way, slight decrease of prices for fruits and vegetables experienced right after New Year holidays changed into growth again. More detailed information of spring prices for traditional vegetables and potatoes and forecast of new season market trends will be available during the third international conference “Potato and Vegetables of Ukraine-2011”. This event is to take place at Shuvar wholesale market, Lvov, Ukraine, February 24-25, 2011. On-line registration is available through this link.
