The record-breaking onion production expected for Ukraine in 2011

2011 further expansion of onion producing areas in Ukraine may lead to 10% increase of onion production in the country. This will result in oversupply reaching 250 thousand tonnes and may lead to the dramatic price decrease in the second half of the season. This was said by Tetiana Getman, Editor-in-Chief of Fruit-Inform Project, at the third international conference “Potato and Vegetables of Ukraine-2011”. This event is taking place at Shuvar wholesale market for agricultural produce, Lvov, Ukraine, February 24-25, 2011.

“Onion production is gradually passing to commercial producers, and these farms are very cautious in plans on area expansion. At the same time, the Fruit-Inform Project's survey conducted before the conference has shown that many farmers, for any reasons having previously abandoned onion growing, decided to revert to this business in the new season. Moreover, areas under onions expanded also in the previous year”, Mrs. Getman noted.
