Cabbage higher in price than bananas in Ukraine
According to Fruit-Inform Project, Ukraine currently faces the unprecedented situation when retail prices of cabbage, traditional for our country, are practically at the same levels with prices for exotic bananas and even sometimes higher.
“Currently, wholesale prices of late cabbage reach UAH 9-10/kg (EUR 0,80-0,90/kg) that is absolutely record-breaking level for all history of independent Ukraine”, Andriy Yarmak, Head of Fruit-Inform Project, says. “Such prices for cabbage are more than unusual for mid March as prices usually reach the highest levels in the second half of April”, the expert continues.
Experts of Fruit-Inform Project warn that such a level of prices for cabbage will certainly lead to sharp expansion of areas under this crop, first of all in household farms, that may negatively impact farmers' incomes from cabbage growing in 2011. Besides this, it is traditional that during such years there are a lot of big producers allotting 50-100 hectares under cabbage at once, primarily among farms engaged in grain and oil seed production.
More detailed information of cabbage production and price prospects in the new season will be available in the regular production and price forecast which is to start to be prepared by analysts of Fruit-Inform Project in a week.
