This season's harvesting of Ukrainian early vegetables is delayed
According to analysts of Fruit-Inform Project, cold spring of 2011 significantly delays harvesting of early vegetables in Ukraine and can negatively affect yields of late vegetables.
Producers reported of planting of early vegetables having been delayed by at least 10-14 days. Besides this, planting of many late vegetables and late potato varieties giving the most part of the harvest was delayed by 2 weeks, even in southern regions of the country. Spring activities in central and northern regions are also conducted later than usually.
Analysts think that late spring will not have any bad effects on harvesting schedule of mid-season and late varieties; however, it may well have negative impact on yields and quality of produce.
At the same time, such a situation gives a good opportunity to those farms which are still trading in last year's produce. The marketing season of early vegetables will most likely be shorter than usually. And this means that prices for last year's vegetables will longer stay at high levels.
More detailed information about what developments will be experienced in the market for fruits, berries, and vegetables of Ukraine in the new season, and what factors will influence pricing of produce, will be available in the new fundamental study of Fruit-Inform Project: “Fruit & Vegetable Market of Ukraine-2011: Last Season's Results and Forecasts for the Following Season”.
