Fruit and vegetable prices keeping their steady growth in Ukraine

Fruit and vegetable index of Fruit-Inform Project shows that, as we had forecast, fruit and vegetable prices keep their growth in April. Over the second week of this month fruits and vegetables became another 2% more expensive. In such a way, over first two weeks of April fruit and vegetable prices have grown by 3.6%, or, in other words, fruits and vegetables were going up in price at the rate of 1% per every 4 days.

Growth of fruit and vegetable prices was predominantly caused by increase in vegetable prices. The sharpest price growth was registered for greenhouse vegetables due to worsening of weather conditions and decrease of output with simultaneous growth of demand. Borsch vegetables (onions, cabbage, beets, carrots) and potatoes set another price record as they increased in price by 2% over a week. Carrot prices grew the most: by 19% at once over a week.

Fruit prices increased too, although only by 0.7% over a week. Among fruits, only bananas grew in price. At the same time, garden strawberry prices fell by 10%.

Analysts of Fruit-Inform Project predict garden strawberry prices to keep their decreasing trend in future; however, demand for these berries will be growing.

More detailed information about prospects of the berry season, as well as about new market niches in this dynamically growing sector will be available in reports of the leading experts of this business at the Second International Conference “Berries of Ukraine-2011: Freezing and Fresh Market” that will take place in Lviv, Ukraine, May 19-20, 2011.
