Russians consume more than 10,000 tonnes of imported potatoes a day
According to Fruit-Inform Project, Russia keeps on setting new records in potato imports. In particular, in April 2011, for the first time in the country's history, Russia imported more than 300,000 tonnes of this tuber crop. And this means that every day Russians bought more than 10,000 tonnes of imported potatoes.
For comparison, last year potato imports in April were 5.7 times lower, and the previous record in monthly imports set in March 2011 was beaten by 72% at once! “Taking into account a cold spring and high prices for early potatoes in Europe, we expect Russia's potato imports to increase by another 30-40% in May 2011 and set a new absolute record”, Andriy Yarmak, head of Fruit-Inform Project, says.
