Europe facing oversupply of peaches, nectarines and some vegetables

According to Fruit-Inform Project, there was a sharp reduction of prices for peaches and nectarines in the EU countries this week. In particular, peach prices decreased to EUR 0.20-0.30/kg in the wholesale markets of Italy. Such a price level does not cover costs for growing, harvesting and transportation of these commodities.

Moreover, market participants note that tomato prices have already fallen to EUR 0.40-0.50/kg, and cucumber prices – even lower. Fruit and vegetable industry representatives are also seriously concerned over probable growth in production of late vegetables in the EU and forecasts of increase in production of vegetables in Russia which, according to Fruit-Inform Project, will sharply reduce vegetable imports in the new season.

More detailed information about fruit and vegetable production, price and import prospects in the Russian Federation will be presented during the Fourth International Conference ”Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia” that will take place as a part of World Food Moscow, Russia, September 14, 2011.
