Sharp slump of tomato prices in Ukraine to lead to increase in exports

According to Fruit-Inform Project, sharp slump of tomato prices in the Ukrainian market led to increase in Russian wholesalers' interest to purchase of Ukrainian produce.

We would remind that over last 3 weeks wholesale prices for tomatoes fell almost 3 times in Ukraine thanks to sharp growth of the supply of field-grown produce. Under such circumstances, sales of greenhouse tomatoes turn out to be practically unprofitable in the internal market. Therefore greenhouse centers prefer to supply their tomatoes to the Russian Federation where average prices are 2-3 times higher.

“Over last 2 years Ukraine has been entering the group of top-three largest exporters of greenhouse tomatoes to the Russian market supplying its produce predominantly in spring and summer”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform Project, says. “In this season we expect the increase of Ukrainian greenhouse tomato exports to Russia to reach 25-30%”, Mrs. Getman adds.

More detailed information about prospects of exports to Russia will be presented during the Fourth International Conference “Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia – 2011” which will take place in conjunction with World Food Moscow, September 14, 2011. Registration of the conference participants is currently in active progress.
