Moldovan gardeners becoming more and more dependent on exports
According to Fruit-Inform Project, Moldova continues to increase its fresh fruit and nut exports thanks to growth of domestic production. On the one hand, this makes Moldovan fruit industry more and more dependent on the situation in the markets of other countries, but, on the other hand, brings good returns. In particular, Moldova's positive balance of external trade in fruits and nuts has already reached $100-110 mln (even with account of imported exotics), and the value of exports – more than $160 mln. For comparison, Ukraine has sharply negative balance of external trade in fruits and the value of its fruit exports is just $40 mln more than Moldova's ones.
It is a threat for Moldovan fruit and vegetable industry that the country as before significantly depends on exports to Russia. As of today, every second dollar of Moldova's fruit and nut export value is from Russia. France remains the second largest target market for Moldovan suppliers over recent years thanks to large volumes of Moldova's walnut exports to this destination. For the same reason, Greece takes the fourth place. Belarus accounts for 6% of total fruit and nut exports from Moldova and takes the third place. Belarus mainly imports Moldovan peaches, apples, grapes, apricots and plums. Neighboring Ukraine takes only the 11th place among Moldova's largest target markets. At the same time, this fact enables to doubt the official statistics, as real volumes of apple, grape and summer stone fruit exports from Moldova to Ukraine are considerably higher than official ones.
We would remind you that the first in the CIS international conference “Apple Business of Ukraine, Russia and Moldova - 2011” will take place at Stolychnyi Wholesale Market (the largest wholesale market of Ukraine), Kiev, Ukraine, August 11, 2011.
